Plants for Winter Interest & Holiday Decor

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a plethora of fresh greens, brilliant berries, and colorful twigs right outside your door to brighten the dreary winter landscape and decorate the holiday home? Endless fodder for wreath making, mantle decorating, garland enhancing, and container filling can be yours for years to come if you plan well now.

NOVEMBER IS AN EXCELLENT TIME TO PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS.

In most parts of the country, the soil has not yet frozen and may still be warm. At this time of year, garden centers generally have their end-of-season sales, making it more affordable to add larger, more costly woody plants to your landscape.

Things to consider when selecting plants to add to your winter and holiday décor landscape –

PROPERTY PROPORTIONS
Some trees and shrubs are quite large at maturity; make sure they have room to grow. For smaller properties, choose dwarf varieties.

PLANT PLACEMENT
Be sure your selections receive the proper nutrition, water, and sunlight that they require. For viewing and adequate sunlight, ensure taller plants are not blocking shorter ones.

PROPER PLANTING
Follow best practices when planting all landscape plants, especially costly trees and shrubs. Extra care at planting time, such as amending the soil, planting at the correct depth, and watering well, will reward you significantly in the long run.

PERFECT PRUNING
Provide new landscape plants the opportunity to take root and grow before you begin cutting from them. While they settle in, enjoy their beauty. When cutting for winter and holiday décor, select, first, branches that would be pruned otherwise to improve the plant's overall shape. Always be careful not to over-prune your trees and shrubs, risking permanent damage to their health and appearance.
ORGANIC & NATURAL PLANTING SOIL FOR ACID-LOVING PLANTS

Both broadleaf and needled evergreens prefer compost-rich, well-draining, acidic soil. When adding these plants to your landscape, be sure to amend your native soil with Coast of Maine® Organic & Natural Planting Soil for Acid-Loving Plants. Meeting valuable landscape plants’ needs early on will contribute to their overall health and longevity.
