We have developed a unique line of compost-based soils, produced at facilities in Marion Township, Maine and Miramichi, New Brunswick.
We are especially proud of our composts. We start with carefully designed and tested recipes and the best ingredients. Just as important, however, is our attention to detail during the composting process. That means frequent turning, sampling and testing and a lengthy aging and curing process.
All our products are certified by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association for use in growing certified organic crops. We hope you will try them in your garden.
Kennebunk Blend
Ultra-Light Compost
Kennebunk Blend is a dry, lightweight, finely textured dehydrated compost with the look of dark brown coffee grounds. It is also half the weight of normal compost. Made from 100% composted hen manure, it is specifically designed as a lawn and garden top-dressing that is easily applied using any drop or rotary spreader.
Finished compost can be 50% or more water, enough to make it damp, heavy and messy coming out of the bag. Dehydration solves these problems by removing most of that moisture. We use rich composted hen manure (higher in macro-nutrients than traditional cow manure) which we then dehydrate and pasteurize at 180 degrees (C) for 30 minutes. We also burn hen manure (instead of heavy fuel oil) to generate our heat, minimizing energy costs and recycling the entire waste stream. The carefully screened "fines" become an easily "spread-able" top-dressing that is less than half the weight of regular compost without any of the mess!
To apply, set your drop or rotary spreader to "wide open" and begin. We recommend an application rate of 1/16th of an inch on established lawns (use twice that for new lawns) or a light covering in the early spring and again in late fall. At this rate, one 2 cubic foot bag should cover 1,000 square feet. Once down, it should be immediately watered-in, ensuring it all gets in contact with the soil. It is organic and safe to use, thus the family can be back outside as soon you are finished.
You can also use Kennebunk Blend as a conventional soil amendment, exactly as you would any other bagged compost. Carefully combine it with native soil at a ratio of 1:3 (one part Kennebunk Blend for every three parts soil). It can be used in the same proportions when bedding annuals or planting perennials, trees, shrubs and vegetables. Spread any excess soil and compost on the surface.
This blend is named for the popular southern Maine seaside community of Kennebunk, long a popular summer resort and now a thriving year-round community.
The same people we partner with in the production of our bark mulches produce Kennebunk Blend for us in New Brunswick, Canada. It is available in 2 cubic foot bags (approximate weight 40 lbs) at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Bar Harbor Blend
Premium Potting Soil
Bar Harbor Blend is our new, all-purpose potting soil introduced for the 2005 season. It is a rich, dark brown and full bodied, designed for potting or re-potting house plants, planting hanging baskets, window boxes and all containers. It can also be used as a seed starter and for potting-up seedlings.
Bar Harbor Blend is made with lobster and aspen bark compost, long staple horticultural grade sphagnum peat moss and perlite. Like all compost-based soils, this too requires less watering.
We've named this blend for the town of Bar Harbor, located on Mount Desert Island overlooking Frenchman Bay. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park and one of the jewels of the Maine coast.
It is available in one and two cubic foot bags and 8 and 16 quart bags at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Cobscook Blend
Gardening Soil
Cobscook Blend is a richly textured all-purpose gardening soil designed for potting all larger, outdoor containers as well as planting beds and borders. It is a dark, old-fashioned, full-bodied soil with a pH of between 6.3 and 6.8. Because it is made with compost, it also requires less watering and feeding.
Cobscook Blend is made with a blend of fully matured and cured salmon, blueberry and cow manure composts, aged bark, long staple sphagnum peat moss and horticultural limestone.
We've named this blend for Cobscook Bay, a complex maze of tidal inlets off Passamaquoddy Bay in Eastern Maine and home to countless bald eagles, loons, moose and black bear.
It is available in one and two cubic foot (60 lb) bags at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Penobscot Blend
Compost & Peat
Penobscot Blend is our popular all-purpose planting mix. A blend of compost and peat, it is ideal for planting annuals, perennials, roses, shrubs and trees or conditioning gardens, beds and borders. It is rich in organic material, trace elements and nicely balances drainage and water retention.
Penobscot Blend is made with fully matured and cured salmon, blueberry and mussel composts (2/3) and sphagnum moss peat (1/3).
What makes Penobscot Blend unique are the mussels. The shells are crushed during composting and add enough calcium to naturally balance the blend's pH. Larger shell fragments help aerate and add texture to your soil. According to some of our customers it also helps control slugs.
We have named this blend for Penobscot Bay, located in the heart of Maine's mid-coast and dotted with spruce islands and picturesque fishing villages like Camden and Castine.
Penobscot Blend is available in one cubic foot (40 lb) bags at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Quoddy Blend
Lobster Compost
Quoddy Blend is a blend of fully cured, fully matured composts specifically designed for conditioning gardens, beds and borders, re-conditioning poor or maintaining healthy soils, and for planting trees, shrubs and roses. It is more coarsely textured than Penobscot Blend, to help break up dense or compacted soils.
Quoddy Blend is made entirely from composted crab, lobster, salmon and aspen bark with added composted cow manure for texture. The crab and lobster shells are a rich source of calcium and chitin, the aspen bark a source of tannins and lignins.
We have named this blend for Passamaquoddy Bay, or "Quoddy" for short. The bay marks Maine's easternmost border with Canada and its deep, nutrientÐrich waters, protected inlets, strong tides and currents make it ideal for salmon farming.
Quoddy is now produced for us in New Brunswick, Canada by the same people with whom we partner in the production of Fermented Salmon. It is available
in 40 lb. bags at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Monhegan Blend
Black Earth
Monhegan Blend Black Earth is an exceptionally rich blend of naturally composted barks and fine sand. The result is a light, easy-to-use, all-purpose organic soil that is ideal both for top dressing lawns and all lawn repair jobs.
A beautiful lawn starts with healthy soil. That means soil with enough organic material to support the beneficial microorganisms that process the essential nutrients that feed your grass. Monhegan Blend is an excellent source of organic material. Remember, a naturally healthy lawn is more drought, weed and disease resistant and requires less watering and feeding.
We have named this blend for Monhegan Island, a rocky outcropping twelve miles off Maine's mid coast and accessible by ferry from the picturesque coastal village of Port Clyde. The island is home to fishermen and supports a thriving artists' colony in the summer.
Monhegan Blend is produced for us in New Brunswick, Canada by the same people with whom we partner in the production of Fermented Salmon. It is available in 1 cubic foot bags (approximate weight 30 lbs) at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Schoodic Blend
Composted Manure
Schoodic Blend is a rich mixture of carefully cured and matured composted cow and hen manures, designed for maintaining gardens, beds and borders or re-conditioning soils with a history of poor production. Compost is a rich source of organic material and will help improve the moisture and nutrient holding capacity of your soil.
Because the manures in Schoodic Blend are composted with aspen bark, it is also lighter, thus easier to use than most conventional manures. Nothing else has been added to provide bulk or boost its analysis.
This blend is named for Schoodic Peninsula, which frames the eastern side of Frenchman's Bay and is part of Acadia National Park. You enter this less frequented part of the Park via the villages of Winter Harbor and Birch Harbor and can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Desert Island to the west.
The same people we partner with in the production of Fermented Salmon produce Schoodic Blend for us in New Brunswick, Canada. It is available in 1 cubic foot bags (approximate weight 30 lbs) at selected retailers in the Northeast.
