We now have two bagged mulch programs. The first is a collection of composted mulches designed for use in annual, perennial, rose and vegetable gardens. It includes a unique dehydrated mulching compost and two exceptional bark mulches made with almost completely decomposed very old bark that has been left undisturbed for decades and naturally decomposed into a fine, rich humus. Our second program includes five more conventional mulches made with much younger material. As such, they are better suited for mulching around shrubs and trees where insulation, weed suppression and moisture retention are the primary objectives.
Ogunquit Blend
Mulching Compost
Ogunquit Blend is lightweight, dark, finely textured, slightly woody mulch made from dehydrated hen manure compost. As such, it can be safely used in annual, perennial and rose beds and around trees and shrubs. It is a very attractive, cost-effective substitute for traditional bark mulches, buckwheat hulls or cocoa shells that will actually add value to your soil.
Because it is dehydrated, Ogunquit Blend is half the weight of normal compost and lighter than most bark mulches. We start with rich composted hen manure (higher in macro-nutrients than traditional cow manure) which we then dehydrate and pasteurize at 180 degrees (C) for 30 minutes. We also burn hen manure (instead of heavy fuel oil) to generate our heat, minimizing energy costs and recycling the entire waste stream.
Ogunquit Blend helps retain moisture and insulates the soil in beds, borders and gardens. It is also a wonderful source of organic material that will help nourish rather than suffocate those soils. We recommend you dig it in each fall and replenish it in the spring.
Bark mulches have become very popular over the years. However, they typically contain a lot of raw wood. In fact, the cheapest may be all wood that has been dyed to look like bark! The problem is wood will immediately start to decompose when it comes in contact with the soil, a process requiring a lot of nitrogen. As a result, these mulches can end up competing with your plants for available nitrogen in the upper layers of your soil. Ogunquit Blend will nurture your plants, not stifle them. A light one-inch layer is all you need to provide a natural, attractive back drop for your flowers, shrubs and trees.
This blend is named for the popular southern Maine seaside community of Ogunquit, long a popular summer resort and now a thriving year-round community.
The same people we partner with in the production of our bark mulches produce Ogunquit Blend for us in New Brunswick, Canada. It is available in 2 cubic foot bags (approximate weight 40 lbs) at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Dark Harbor Blend
Enriching Mulch
Dark Harbor Blend is an exceptionally rich, fine-textured blend of naturally composted barks, ideal for mulching beds, borders and gardens and for use around shrubs and trees.
It will help retain moisture without robbing your soil of nitrogen and help insulate the surface soil against excessive cold and heat that can otherwise damage plant root systems. Because Dark Harbor's barks are almost completely decomposed, it can be dug into your beds and garden in the fall, providing your soil a rich and immediate source of organic material.
We have named this blend for the picturesque island village of Dark Harbor on Isleboro Island in Penobscot Bay.
Dark Harbor Blend is available in one cubic foot (30 lb) bags and two cubic foot (60 lb) bags at selected retailers

Fundy Blend
Enriching Mulch with Seaweed
|
Fundy Blend is the ideal top-dressing for roses and perennials. We combine some of our limited supply of very old, humified birch and maple bark with partially humified hemlock bark and a very rich compost made of kelp solids and sphagnum moss peat. The result is an almost black humus that is rich in organic matter with all the added benefits of both compost and kelp.
Fundy Blend will both enrich your soil and help retain moisture. It will also help insulate the surface soil against both excessive cold and heat that can otherwise damage plant root systems. Because the barks are almost completely decomposed, it can be dug into your beds and garden in the fall, providing your soil a rich and immediate source of organic material. It will not compete with you're your plants for nitrogen as will conventional raw bark mulches.
This blend is named for the Bay of Fundy, the northeast arm of the Gulf of Maine and home to the word's highest tides.
Fundy Blend is available in one cubic foot (40 lb) bags at selected retailers in the Northeast.
Traditional Mulches
Hemlock, Pine & Spruce, Natural Cedar, Red Cedar
This year we have completed our line of traditional bark mulches by adding both 2 and 3 cubic foot bag sizes. These are all double ground, thus finer textured and easier to use when mulching around shrubs and trees. The red cedar is tinted, but we used natural iron oxides in very small quantities so that the color will not wash out as with many other cheaper mulches.
